Why Your Wedding Photographer & Videographer Need to Be a Team - And What Can Happen When They’re Not

When couples plan their wedding, they naturally put a lot of care into choosing the right suppliers. You want people who will deliver incredible work, understand your vision, and keep the day feeling relaxed and joyful.

But one thing that’s often overlooked - and yet makes a huge difference - is how well your photographer and videographer work together.

We’re by your side all day long. We share space, shots, and moments - from getting ready in the morning to portraits, group photos, and everything in between. So, when there's good communication and mutual respect? It shows. The day flows beautifully. You feel calm and supported. Everyone is working toward the same goal: you having the best possible experience.

But what happens when that balance is off?

Unfortunately, not every experience behind the scenes is positive. I’ve worked with teams where I’ve felt:

  • Physically nudged out of the way instead of being spoken to politely

  • Ignored when I’ve asked a simple question and had to repeat myself, even while standing right next to them

  • Met with attitude / unpleasant looks when requesting to share a shot I’d carefully set up

  • Interrupted while directing group photos, with someone speaking over me before I could even give my instructions

  • Left feeling like I was in the way, rather than part of a collaborative team

I’ve always made a point of sharing space respectfully. I’ll happily give room for videographers to capture what they need. I’ve invited them into my setups, offered to work around them, and made sure they’re comfortable. Because I believe in working as a team.

What I don’t expect - or accept - is being made to feel uncomfortable for doing my job professionally.

And I’m not alone in this. I’ve spoken to other suppliers who’ve had similar experiences with the same teams. It’s something that really does affect not just us, but the tone of the day and, potentially, your experience as a couple, too.

So here’s my honest advice: When booking a photographer and videographer, ask if they’ve worked together before. Check whether they’re happy to collaborate, share space, and communicate clearly. Make sure your dream team is one that will lift each other up, and not create unnecessary tension or friction on such an important day.

Because you deserve more than beautiful photos or stunning video, you deserve a calm, joyful, and respectful experience from start to finish.

And if you’re ever unsure or looking for recommendations for kind, talented videographers who work brilliantly alongside me, I’m always happy to help 🤍
